The same way a piece of writing is never \u201cdone\u201d being edited (there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> something), the work to improve your skills doesn\u2019t end.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you write articles, blogs, social media copy or research papers, here are 10 techniques to use to help you write anything well.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1. Cut unnecessary words<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are two paragraphs that say the same thing. Which one is stronger?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Example 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my opinion, the majority of freelancers should probably avoid working for free (or for a nominal sum) unless they are at a very early stage of their career and as yet have no pieces for their portfolio at all.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Example 2: <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freelancers shouldn\u2019t work for free unless they\u2019re just starting out and don\u2019t have any pieces for their portfolio.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second clearly states a stronger case, especially since it reaches the main point with fewer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/words-you-never-need-in-a-sentence\/\"><b>unnecessary words you don&#8217;t need in a sentence<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you write a blog post, most readers will assume it gives your opinion, so you don\u2019t have to state that. <\/span><b>Mastering brevity is an easy way to improve writing skills. Simply be clear, firm and direct<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>2. Avoid well-worn phrases<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some phrases are so familiar they\u2019ve lost their impact: they\u2019ve become clich\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, \u201cIn my opinion,\u201d from the previous example is a phrase you can always cut. Here are a few others:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like stealing candy from a baby\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all intents and purposes\u2026 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(sometimes miswritten as \u201cfor all intensive purposes!\u201d)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let the cat out of the bag\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be tricky to spot these in your own writing, so take a quick look through this<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.be-a-better-writer.com\/cliches.html\"><b>huge list of clich\u00e9s to avoid here on the Be a Better Writer site<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you edit, you don\u2019t need to cut <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clich\u00e9\u2026but check whether it might work better to rephrase.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In dialogue, or in a first-person narrative, clich\u00e9s can be a helpful way to characterize someone\u2019s speech or thought patterns \u2014 but if you want to improve your writing skills, make sure you\u2019re careful and deliberate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>3. Write directly to \u201cyou\u201d (in nonfiction)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Although this isn\u2019t appropriate for <\/b><b><i>every<\/i><\/b><b> form of nonfiction, bloggers and freelancers often write directly to the reader as \u201cyou.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a great way to make your writing better, direct, conversational <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blog posts and articles quite often use \u201cyou\u201d or \u201cyour\u201d very early on, in the title and\/or introduction. For instance, this post on The Write Life:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/freelance-or-full-time\/\">Freelance or Full Time: Which Journalism Path is Right for You?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to work in the media industry as a writer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You<\/strong> generally have two options: <strong>You<\/strong> can seek employment as a staff member of a publication, or look for freelance writing opportunities.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i>(Emphasis mine.) <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or this one about book formatting:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/how-to-format-a-book\/\">How to Format a Book: 10 Tips Your Editor Wants You To Know<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless <b>you<\/b> prefer your friends to be story nerds or those who lean toward obsessive-compulsive tendencies when it comes to grammar, <b>you<\/b> shouldn\u2019t necessarily seek to befriend <a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/find-a-book-editor\/\"><b>your <\/b>editor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to these examples, use the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">singular<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cyou\u201d and avoid phrases like, \u201cSome of you may know\u201d. Yes, you (hopefully!) have more than one reader, but each reader experiences your piece individually.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use \u201cI\u201d where appropriate (e.g. to give an example from your own life) \u2014 though, usually, it\u2019s best to keep the focus of your piece on the reader.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>4. Vary sentence structures<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s wrong with this paragraph?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You should write regularly (not necessarily daily). You should aim to write at least once or twice a week (I recommend a total of 3 \u2013 4 hours per week). You may find it difficult to keep this up at first (especially if you\u2019ve not written much before).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no question the advice it shares is sound and reasonable. Plus, there\u2019s nothing wrong with the actual words used. Still,&nbsp; the structure of each of the three sentences is very similar: each one starts with \u201cYou\u201d then a modal verb (\u201cshould\u201d\/\u201cmay\u201d), and each one ends with a phrase in parentheses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>When you have several sentences in a row that follow the same pattern, they stand out\u2026in a bad way.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, it\u2019s appropriate to structure your sentences like this \u2014 e.g. in a bullet-pointed list \u2014 but in regular paragraphs, it\u2019s often unintentional on the author\u2019s part, and it seems artless and poorly edited to the reader.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more help with sentence structure, check out, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/40717966-it-was-the-best-of-sentences-it-was-the-worst-of-sentences\">It Was the Best of Sentences<\/a>, It Was the Worst of Sentences: A Writer\u2019s Guide to Crafting Killer Sentences<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d by June Casagrande.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>5. Use subheadings as signposts<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you write blog posts, articles or sales copy, subheadings are crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They break up long pieces and help readers stay focused; they also offer \u201csignposts\u201d to readers who may skim for specific information.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you craft your subheadings, think about how to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Make them clear and direct<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (just like titles\/headings) \u2013 Don\u2019t try to get clever!<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Keep them short<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; \u2013 Subheadings have a larger font than regular text and don\u2019t generally look good when they wrap around the end of a line.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Be consistent with the structure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 For instance, each subheading might start with an imperative verb (as in this post).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>6. Use direct, straightforward language<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s rare that you\u2019ll want to write something deliberately indirect! That would be the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of better writing. Instead, you\u2019ll want your words to come across clear and strong to the reader.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means avoid the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/passive-voice\/\"><b>passive voice<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like the plague \u2014 advice most writers have heard before as they learn to improve their writing skills.&nbsp; In case you need a recap, here\u2019s a quick rundown:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Active voice:<\/b> <b><i>John threw the ball.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u279c Succinct and clear.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Passive voice: <\/b><b><i>The ball was thrown by John.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u279c Wordier and less direct.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The passive voice omits the agent (the person who performs the action) from the sentence altogether: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ball was thrown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. See?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This small detail can be useful in many ways to make your writing better; for instance, you might write about something where the agent is unimportant, or where you want to conceal the agent. (\u201cMistakes were made\u201d is a classic example here.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>A good rule of thumb is to always write in a direct, straightforward way.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it as easy as possible for readers to engage with your ideas or your story.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>7. Read aloud (or edit on paper)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one\u2019s first draft is perfect, and the above six suggestions should help you rework yours.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, it helps to go through your piece at a slow and methodical \u2014 many writers find it helps to read aloud since it highlights the cadence of your words.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>If you prefer not to read aloud (or if your colleagues, family or cat would give you funny looks if you tried it), then print out your draft so you can edit it on paper.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a different format to make it easier to spot typos and repetitive phrasings.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At times when it isn\u2019t practical to print, I\u2019ve also found it helpful to convert my draft digitally: that might mean I turn a Word document into a .pdf, put a novel manuscript onto my Kindle or preview a blog post so I can get closer to the reader\u2019s experience.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confident, powerful writing will help your message (or your story) have its full impact on your reader.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>8. Use a grammar checker<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a serious desire to learn how to write better and don\u2019t have access to an in-person editor, consider using a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/best-grammar-checker-tools\/\"><b>grammar checker<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tool.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019ll help you fix grammar and replace common words with more unique options. <\/span><b>Some tools even tell you <\/b><b><i>why<\/i><\/b><b> you should make a certain change, which is an added bonus because it helps you further learn and improve your writing skills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(But remember, don\u2019t write and edit at the same time!)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>9. Liven up your writing with descriptive verbs<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adverbs are the pesky parts of speech that can be tough to eliminate from your writing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they\u2019re descriptive words that modify verbs, adverbs that end with -ly constantly find their way back into sentences. Since people use them so commonly, they sneakily manage to influence our vocabulary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you notice all the unnecessary adverbs? Here\u2019s another way I could\u2019ve written that sentence:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 adverbs that end with -ly always find their way back into sentences. They\u2019re easy to use in conversation, so adverbs are sly in how they influence our vocabulary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To improve your writing skills, <a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/edit-your-copy\/\"><b>tighten your copy<\/b><\/a> and clear your blog, novel or article of -ly adverbs you can replace with more descriptive verbs.&nbsp;The first way I wrote the sentence isn\u2019t incorrect, but the second version is less wordy and complex in comparison. Plus, it contains less fluff.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than write, \u201cShe drove quickly down the street,\u201d focus on the action to help your reader: What\u2019s the driver doing? Speeding, so you could write, \u201cShe raced down the street at lightning speed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a small change to swap out adverbs, but the impact is huge when you do so to better your writing with powerful verbs and less fluff.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>10. Make your sentences flow<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your amazing story won\u2019t reach your readers if it\u2019s not composed with sentences that pace well, have proper punctuation and vivid details to enhance the reader experience.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone has to read your sentences more than once to grasp the main idea, that means your writing lacks flow.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To improve your writing and create more flow, incorporate this checklist of sentence structure elements in your writing routine:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Contractions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Despite the old-age advice, a lack of contractions \u2014 didn\u2019t, can\u2019t, weren\u2019t \u2014 dampens your writing with stiff informality. Smooth sentences that flow require the use of contractions to make them less uptight, plus they make your writing more conversational, personable and easier to comprehend.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Punctuation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Take risks with punctuation to add rhythm to your writing. Without semicolons, em-dashes, apostrophes, periods and more, our stories would fall flat with no diversity in tone, cadence and feeling. For example, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/how-to-use-ellipsis\/\">use ellipses<\/a> to add mystery\u2026 Or, allude to a somber tone with shorter sentences; the kinds that create tension in your story, one word after the word.<\/span><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Imagery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Paint a picture for your readers that lures them in page after page, or scroll after scroll. You can make boring sentences all the more exciting with vivid details that create visuals strong enough to ignite your reader\u2019s imagination. Don\u2019t go overboard and paint the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> picture \u2014 just enough to keep them going.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides these 10 effective tips to use to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/what-is-good-writing\/\">better writer<\/a> and improve your skills, the one thing you have to do is write.
