{"id":11032,"date":"2017-08-15T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=11032"},"modified":"2017-08-15T12:49:20","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T16:49:20","slug":"cursive-writing-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=11032","title":{"rendered":"The Great Cursive Writing Debate: Lost Art or Vital Skill?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/is-the-oxford-comma-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxford comma debate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been settled, as least in one court of law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But another debate rages on in the halls of academia and the forums of word nerds: the great cursive debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaeteachers.org\/index.php\/blog\/395-the-great-cursive-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Core standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> removed cursive instruction as a requirement, which means that in 41 states, teachers aren\u2019t obligated to teach it\u2026so many of them don\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But states like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/curriculum\/2014\/08\/cursive_writing_tennessee.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/curriculum\/2016\/06\/louisiana_cursive_12th_grade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louisiana <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/curriculum\/2014\/04\/states_fight_to_keep_cursive_i.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have fought back, making cursive a statewide standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To some, this gradual phasing out is inevitable, if not overdue. Others lament the loss of what they see as an art form and a necessary part of childhood education.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So are the connections, curlicues and flourishes most of us grew up with still relevant, or not? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a look at both sides of the debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pros of cursive instruction<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. It\u2019s good for your brain<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/reasons-to-learn-cursive-2013-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the visceral experience of cursive writing can help students in more ways than being able to pen a pretty thank you note. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since it engages both the right and left hemispheres of the brain, <\/span><b>it can actually aid in reading comprehension, idea generation, spelling, brain development and memory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. It helps with dyslexia<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/people.rit.edu\/wlrgsh\/Handwriting.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also suggest learning <\/span><b>cursive can help students who suffer from forms of dyslexia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a disorder in which people have difficulty reading and writing words. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typing, printing and cursive all stimulate different parts of the brain, and something about the circuits cursive activates, as well as the fine motor skills it hones, may help those who have difficulty forming written letters in the right order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. It bridges generations<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children who never learn cursive could have trouble doing things like deciphering a birthday note from Grandma or recognizing the words John Hancock signed his name under on the Declaration of Independence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like knowing Latin can help you understand new languages, <\/span><b>knowing cursive can help you unlock a wealth of historical knowledge and connect with past generations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCursive writing is a long-held cultural tradition in this country and should continue to be taught,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Jimmy Bryant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of archives and special collections at the University of Central Arkansas; \u201cnot just for the sake of tradition, but also to preserve the history of our nation.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. It\u2019s a form of creativity<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From art classes to music programs, the chances for students to exercise <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/two-surefire-remedies-creative-burnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creativity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in school have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaeteachers.org\/index.php\/blog\/700-report-art-education-programs-on-the-decline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the decline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for decades. If cursive writing is phased out altogether, supporters argue, it will be one more form of artistic self-expression missing from today\u2019s curriculums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>I believe that cursive handwriting is the creative canary in the coal mine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; and it\u2019s slowly, almost imperceptibly dying,\u201d says cursive advocate Carew Papritz in an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodmenproject.com\/ethics-values\/case-cursive-interview-carew-papritz-jhlh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Good Men Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIn our 24\/7, technology-drenched, social-media drowning world, we are too busy to notice and too busy to care that we are losing the ability to learn how to self-express &#8212; by developing and harnessing the creative side of our nature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cons of cursive instruction<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. It\u2019s gone the way of the typewriter<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our digital age of laptops and texting, some argue cursive has become obsolete. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many times have you penned a letter, written a check or drafted a story out longhand lately? (If the latter, you\u2019re in good company &#8212; it\u2019s the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/02\/15\/modern-writers-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preferred method of wordsmiths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like George R. R. Martin and Joyce Carol Oates ). Legal signatures don\u2019t need to be in cursive; in fact, electronic signatures are often acceptable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>As we have done with the abacus and the slide rule, it is time to retire the teaching of cursive. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writing is on the wall,\u201d writes Morgan Polikoff, assistant education professor at the University of Southern California\u2019s Rossier School of Education, in a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opinion piece titled, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/roomfordebate\/2013\/04\/30\/should-schools-require-children-to-learn-cursive\/let-cursive-handwriting-die\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let Cursive Writing Die<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. It wastes valuable learning time<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers are already hard-pressed to cram everything they\u2019re supposed to into the school day, especially in an educational atmosphere heavily geared towards meet testing requirements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With big expectations to live up and not much time to do it in, teachers are forced to be selective &#8212; and sometimes, cursive writing just doesn\u2019t make the cut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the things we heard from teachers around the country\u2026was that sometimes cursive writing takes an enormous amount of instructional time,\u201d Sue Pimentel, one of the people in charge of setting Common Core\u2019s English\/language standards, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/updates\/scary-clown-rumors-serious-business-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PBS NewsHour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><b>You could be spending time on other things rather than students practicing cursive writing. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s really a matter of emphasis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. You can get the benefits of handwriting without writing in cursive<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to know how to write cursive in order to be able to read it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/roomfordebate\/2013\/04\/30\/should-schools-require-children-to-learn-cursive\/handwriting-matters-cursive-doesnt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that show, definitely, that writing in cursive is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/9-tools-to-help-you-record-and-transcribe-interviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more efficient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than printing. Opponents argue that holding onto cursive as the last bastion of the art of handwriting misses the mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As handwriting author Kate Gladstone puts it in an opinion piece on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Mandating cursive to preserve handwriting resembles mandating stovepipe hats and crinolines to preserve the art of tailoring.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Most people abandon it anyway<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even those who learn cursive as children usually end up scrapping the practice as they get older. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A survey<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by Zane-Bloser, a cursive textbook publisher, found that even handwriting teachers rarely used cursive regularly. <\/span><b>The majority of them used an amalgam of print and cursive writing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, something I myself do after a lifetime of tinkering with my personal style and learning what felt most efficient for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, would I go back in time and remove cursive from my lessons if I could, in order to focus on whatever might better serve me in 2017? I was the sort of kid who asked for a calligraphy set for Christmas, so I recuse myself from passing judgment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where do you fall in the great cursive debate?
