{"id":11152,"date":"2017-09-15T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=11152"},"modified":"2017-08-27T10:24:39","modified_gmt":"2017-08-27T14:24:39","slug":"flexibility-in-your-writing-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/flexibility-in-your-writing-career\/","title":{"rendered":"How Your Flexibility is Actually Hurting Your Writing Career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s fashionable these days to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flexible<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in all areas of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demands of your job are always changing, your family dynamic is in perpetual flux and news breaks in a flash.You have to adapt or you\u2019ll be left behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>However, I\u2019m here to tell you that being too flexible can actually hurt your writing career.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t have a strong, unwavering foundation, our frenzied world will swallow you up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And nothing is more vulnerable in this regard than your writing \u2014 the next \u201curgent\u201d matter is always waiting around the corner to commandeer whatever time you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thought<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you had to write.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only by standing steadfast in your convictions can you protect your writing career against the ravages of the mayhem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are three ways being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflexible<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can actually make you a better writer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Finish what you start<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writers tend to be creative sorts, which is great for coming up with story ideas, but can be lousy for fulfilling long-term dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that we often have<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so many <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideas that it can be hard to stay focused on the project in front of us. It\u2019s infinitely more exciting, after all, to start on something <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than to plug away at the novel we\u2019ve been writing for the last two months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is, though, that writing is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/5-reasons-writing-is-the-worst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like every other job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 sometimes it really is<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just a job<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You have to grind through the tough and boring tasks of filling in your story and developing your characters if you want to reach your ultimate goals.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many abandoned novels or blog posts do you have lying around right now? If you\u2019re like most authors, the answer is, \u201ctoo many.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wouldn\u2019t you have been closer to \u201csuccess\u201d \u2014 however you define that \u2014 if you had managed to actually finish just half of those stunted works rather than moving on to something shiny and new when the going got tough?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know I would have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be flexible with the projects you consider, but once you commit to something, you need to become rigid in your determination to see it through. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be <\/span><b>inflexible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when your mind tries to tell you that a sparkly vampire YA novel would be so much more fun than the Western you\u2019re halfway through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold fast to your original conviction and finish what you started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11443\" src=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/flexibility-hurt.jpg\" alt=\"become a better writer\" width=\"350\" height=\"714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/flexibility-hurt.jpg 735w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/flexibility-hurt-147x300.jpg 147w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/flexibility-hurt-502x1024.jpg 502w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>2. Protect your writing time<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re really good at doing things for other people, and we hardly ever miss an \u201cappointment\u201d that impacts someone other than ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When was the last time you bagged a meeting at work or failed to pick up your son from soccer practice? You probably can\u2019t even remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when was the last time you went a day without hitting your writing goals or without writing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? It probably happens all the time, or at least more frequently than you would like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is we inherently <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to please people, and we hate to disappoint them. We\u2019ll go out of our way to make sure we serve those around us even if that means missing out on something we really want to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can fix this situation starting today, though, and you can do it without compromising on your commitments and without feeling guilty. The solution starts and ends with your daily calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Specifically, you need to find the open spots in your calendar every day and then actually <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/time-management-for-freelance-writers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>schedule them <\/b><b><i>as writing times<\/i><\/b><\/a><b> just like you would any other appointment. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell everyone who might be affected by your schedule and share your electronic calendar with them if possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the tough part \u2014 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stick to your schedule!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You wouldn\u2019t leave your son standing out in the rain after practice just because your neighbor asked you to help move some furniture, and you shouldn\u2019t give up your writing appointment, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make the time commitments to yourself and to your writing, and then be <\/span><b>inflexible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with regard to that schedule. Nothing short of a bloody emergency should keep your butt from that chair or your fingers from that keyboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Keep writing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing is hard, and it\u2019s hard in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all sorts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to sit down and write every day when you know there will be days that the words just won\u2019t come. It\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to keep pushing through your novel when it takes you a month to write 20 pages and you have 200 more to go. It\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to identify yourself as a writer when you haven\u2019t published <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and you hold down a full-time job that doesn\u2019t involve any sort of writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know what\u2019s easy? Giving up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you can\u2019t do that because you are a writer. I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you are because you\u2019re reading this article. <\/span><b>You have stories to tell and messages to deliver to the world, and you need to accept that your words are worth hearing, worth all the hard days and nights.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must be <\/span><b>inflexible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your resolve to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/call-yourself-a-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become the writer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you know, deep in your soul, you\u2019re supposed to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a fast-moving world out there, and you can\u2019t afford to stand still.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you don\u2019t tap into the power that a little <\/span><b>inflexibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can impart, your author self may get swept away in the tide of constant change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand strong on your writing foundation, though, and you\u2019ll be able to endure the chaos around you and ultimately achieve your goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What do you think?
