Then, you\u2019ve got to wrack your brain for a place you think it could live. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ve got to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/pitch-the-right-editor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figure out who the proper editor is<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the outlet, which can take literal hours of Twitter stalking. (Yes, this is part of your job.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With me so far? Cool. Next, find a way to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/real-freelance-writing-pitches\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make your story sexy in two paragraphs or less<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/biggest-pitch-mistakes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoiding common errors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and convincing the editor you\u2019re qualified to write it. For bonus points, include a timely hook and any common network connections you might have. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now take a deep breath, hit send, and brace yourself\u2026 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026to hear, in all likelihood, a whole lot of nothin\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worst, I\u2019m telling you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Pitchwhiz makes pitching less painful<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a full-time freelance writer, it can seem like every step of the pitching process is working against you. It\u2019ll help you knock out that second step in a flash.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are all sorts of amazing resources available online for writers, many of which are totally free &#8212; and they\u2019ll help you with everything from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/get-better-at-pitching\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/freelance-writing-tools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overall productivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But today, I\u2019m excited to talk about a brand-new one: Pitchwhiz. And I\u2019ve gotta say, it\u2019s the kind of intuitive, awesome, life-easing thing that makes you wonder, \u201cHow did this not already exist in the world?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The idea behind Pitchwhiz is pretty simple: It seeks to connect freelance journalists with the publications who need their work. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It bills itself as \u201cThe easy way for writers to find commissioning editors, and for editors to find the stories that sing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And since so many of us in the wild world that is writing wear both of those hats, you can choose to activate one or both roles and seamlessly switch between them. (For the purposes of this post, though, we\u2019re going to focus on the writing side rather than the editing.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitchwhiz offers writers a host of organizational tools, allowing you to store miscellaneous notes and craft entire pitches right inside the platform. (My current homegrown ideation technique involves a clunky, redundant, tab-switching-intensive combination of two Google Docs spreadsheets and Trello.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And those pitch request emails have already paid off. I saw a story call from SheKnows for its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheknows.com\/special-series\/mom-voyage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom Voyage!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series early one morning and quickly responded, throwing my current hometown, Santa Fe, into the ring. I heard back from the editor within three hours. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hours<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ya\u2019ll. And her response went directly to my linked email address, so I was able to simply respond in line with the conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easiest. Pitch. Ever. (And an extra $200. Score!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, Pitchwhiz is still in beta &#8212; which means the features we\u2019ve outlined here may change (and improve!) over time. And the platform does suffer from some minor growing-pain-related hiccups, as you might expect. For instance, I discovered while updating my writer profile that Pitchwhiz apparently does not yet know about the existence of the entire state of New Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12241\" src=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Pitchwhiz4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Pitchwhiz4.png 1420w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Pitchwhiz4-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Pitchwhiz4-768x377.png 768w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Pitchwhiz4-1024x503.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also encountered some other very small UI issues from time to time, but the site is generally solid, and the idea is absolutely stellar. Although it\u2019s not yet as well-populated as I wish it were &#8212; and think it soon will be &#8212; Pitchwhiz has got huge potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who knows? Maybe our days of professional Twitter stalking will soon be at an end.
