{"id":4398,"date":"2015-09-08T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-08T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=4398"},"modified":"2015-09-03T15:03:07","modified_gmt":"2015-09-03T20:03:07","slug":"tracking-freelance-earnings-august-income-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=4398","title":{"rendered":"Tracking Freelance Earnings: August Income Report From Nicole Dieker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How often do you ask for what you want from clients, whether it\u2019s an extra assignment or a rate increase? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This month, asking for extra work helped take my income to $6,500, my highest ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the roundup for August. This month, it\u2019s impressive:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Completed Pieces: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Work Billed:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $6,513.00<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Earnings Received:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$6,649.30<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wrote just over 54,000 words, with an average per-piece earning of $93. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s significantly higher than July\u2019s per-piece earning of $69, and a lot of it came from the <\/span><b>two highest-paying pieces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I wrote this month: one that brought in $1,039, and one that paid $953.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That second piece, the $953 one, was the one I asked for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask and ye shall receive<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/tracking-freelance-earnings-july-income-report\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I worried that I wasn\u2019t going to earn much over $5,000? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was planning to take a week to visit my sister and her husband and be a featured guest at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/interventioncon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intervention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and &#8212; as I wrote in this very space a month ago &#8212; \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling always means taking an income hit, even if you work on the plane.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I asked myself: what if it didn\u2019t have to be that way? <\/span><b>What if I asked my best-paying client for a second assignment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to cover the income gap that came from taking a few days off? The worst possible scenario would be a polite \u201cNo, we have enough pieces for this month,\u201d so I asked &#8212; and my client said yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s great for two reasons. First, it added $953 to my monthly income total, and second, <\/span><b>it set a precedent.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Now my client and I both know that I can complete two pieces in a month, which means I am going to pitch two pieces this month. Next month, I might pitch three.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes I forget that I can ask my clients if they want more work from me. This month, I\u2019m glad I remembered. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The power of the pageview bonus<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The $953 piece took me from $5,000 to $6,000 last month. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What pushed me over $6,500? A $500 bonus for an article on The Penny Hoarder about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepennyhoarder.com\/get-paid-for-junk-mail\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">getting paid for junk mail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This article received more than 250,000 pageviews, which meant I earned an extra $500. This is the second time I\u2019ve received a bonus on this piece, which I wrote in January 2015. I\u2019m delighted that it still resonates with so many readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/getting-paid-by-the-pageview\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pageview bonuses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because <\/span><b>I get paid without having to do any extra work. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always do my part to increase pageviews by sharing my articles on social media (and responding to Facebook comments and Twitter replies), but that doesn\u2019t feel like \u201cextra\u201d work. I\u2019m not able to track my own pageviews with this client, so I don\u2019t know when I am getting close to a bonus, but I am always glad when I get one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of pageview bonus is also great for me because it comes on top of a competitive base pay. Some publications prefer to offer low base pay and structure more of their compensation through bonuses. <\/span><b>I prefer high base pay and the occasional bonus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; after all, I can\u2019t really control how many people view my articles!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my other clients gives writers bonuses for being active in the comments section, which I also appreciate. <\/span><b>Any time a client offers me a low-effort way to make a little extra money, I know that client values its writers and the work we do.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crowdfunding still doesn\u2019t beat client work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, I announced that I\u2019m writing a novel titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biographies of Ordinary People<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and crowdfunding the process through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/NicoleDieker?ty=h\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patreon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been posting two chapters of my novel every week, and have received a lot of amazing feedback from readers, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KateDiehm\/status\/634511976673247232\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a reader who tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThis is maybe the most beautiful book I\u2019ve read in a long time &#8212; thanks!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the crowdfunding initiative has not grown to the point where I can consider dropping &#8212; or even seriously cutting back on &#8212; any of my current freelancing clients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of this writing, my Patreon brings me $350 per month in crowdsourced pledges. That\u2019s more than many of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/featured?cat=3\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patreon\u2019s featured writers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bring in, so I feel like my project is successful, but it\u2019s not enough to make a significant difference in my freelancing life aside from the fact that <\/span><b>I\u2019m developing a <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/build-author-platform-7-manageable-ways-start-scratch\/#.ckuspj:O0y0\" target=\"_blank\"><b>community of readers<\/b><\/a><b> who are invested in this novel.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That community of readers makes the whole Patreon project worth it. But <\/span><b>crowdfunding still doesn\u2019t beat client work financially,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at least not for me. I like knowing roughly how much income I\u2019ll earn every month, and I also like knowing I can increase my client income just by asking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When was the last time you asked a regular client for extra work?
