I knew I needed the just-right name to convey who the character was, but I didn\u2019t know how to figure out what that just-right name was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a real drag, because you don\u2019t feel like you can move on and keep writing, but you don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/time-management-freelance-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managing your time wisely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you spend a while deciding on a character name.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andre Cruz previously offered six useful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/6-creative-ways-to-name-your-fictional-characters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">character-naming suggestions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but if you\u2019re still stuck, never fear. I have five more to help you stop agonizing. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OK, you might never completely quit agonizing, but <\/span><b>these five easy tricks can help you get better at coming up with more names you like &#8212; and doing it faster.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Try the Random Name Generator<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love this thing!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just choose your character\u2019s gender and whether you want a common, average, or rare name, and check out what you get. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few examples fresh from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/random-name-generator.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Random Name Generator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fawn Spicer: Could a steampunk airship pirate who flies the world with her trusty crew, consisting of Mad Max the one-eyed clockwork man, Bowie the half-parrot boy, and Frida Malark, a shapeshifter trained in the Lost Arts of Wildness who doesn\u2019t talk much but helps run the ship with an iron fist \u2026 literally.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or what about Illuminada Lo? Sounds like a queen of an ancient lost civilization who lives in an ice palace deep under the ground, but she\u2019s been kidnapped by an evil warlord who wants her to breed children for him. Maybe Fawn should come rescue her. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phew. Totally just made all that up based on a couple of names. I would use those. I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use those.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Hey, no stealing my character names now.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Make use of ancient civilizations<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YA fantasy writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/1NqL9cz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ysabeau Wilce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flora Segunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series in the Republic of Califa, a magic- and Aztec-influenced version of California in the 19th Century &#8212; think Gold Rush. Many of the names, especially of the villains, reflect Aztec naming conventions. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gives the world a particular flair and atmosphere of mystery. <\/span><b>Think of the geography and history of your story when you\u2019re looking for naming inspiration.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Be creative with nicknames<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your characters silly monikers that either are nicknames or sound like them. Some of my favorites:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiny Doom (best character name ever!) and Nini Mo, both from Ysabeau Wilce\u2019s aforementioned <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flora Segunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series<\/span><\/span> <\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Cindy from the TV series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Angel <\/span><\/i>  <\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vex and Trick from the TV series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lost Girl <\/span><\/i>  <\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Limberleg, from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Boneshaker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Kate Milford<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Consider sounds and syllables<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trinica Dracken. How\u2019s that for a villain-slash-love interest? She\u2019s from Christopher Wooding\u2019s Tales of the Ketty Jay series. With all those hard-hitting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mimicmethod.com\/place-of-articulation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dental consonants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what a tough soul she is. But all might not be quite as it seems.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or what about Rath Roiben Rye from Holly Black\u2019s Ironside faerie series? He\u2019s a platinum-haired dark-fey elf with cheekbones that could cut glass. But you didn\u2019t need me to tell you that, did you? It\u2019s all in the name.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Keep a file of names you like<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you hear a unique name, write it down. My list includes: Chiara Peacock, Puck Steenbergen, Captain F. S. Brereton (he was actually an author), and Fenton Ash (the pseudonym of a late 19th-century author).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>You can use the names straight from the list, but you can also ask yourself what you like about them to get a better sense of how you want your character\u2019s names to sound. <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I like unique names, and I have a thing about rhythm \u2014 names with alternating number of syllables often catch my notice (two syllables for the first name, then one for the last; or three syllables followed by two). I also like names that give a sense of personality, that indicate whether this person is likely to be a stodgy old military feller or a cyber-adventurer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>What other tips and tricks do you use to name your characters?
