The novelty of that new tool is quickly replaced by pressure to create content \u2014 and pressure to see results from your efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live video streaming might not seem like a natural promotional tool for writers who work through the written word more than relying on their voice or image. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But creating live video streams through Periscope could help you build your brand and engage with your audience in a fun new way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Periscope?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get the free Periscope app, link it to your Twitter account, and you\u2019re ready to stream live video instantly. You can create private broadcasts for invited users or share them with the public via your Twitter feed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Videos are only available on Periscope for 24 hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but broadcasters can save a copy of the video to be uploaded elsewhere, like a YouTube channel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some peopler prefer a similar app called Meerkat, and Facebook is in the process of rolling out its own streaming-video option. But Periscope&#8217;s integration with Twitter has made it the most popular of the streaming video contenders, with 10 million registered accounts and about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015\/08\/12\/periscopes-live-streaming-video-reaches-nearly-2-million-users\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two million active users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every day. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distraction, or marketing tool?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some folks see live streaming as a distraction. Marketing expert Chris Brogan has done several scopes to see how it will benefit his business. Even though he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrisbrogan.com\/periscope-thoughts\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grew his list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and made some sales, he hasn&#8217;t joined the growing numbers of mega fans, many of whom were disappointed he didn&#8217;t like the new platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others have completely embraced it. Derek Halpern of Social Media Triggers was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/socialtriggers.com\/how-to-use-periscope\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intially skeptical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but gained a huge following on Periscope with just a few broadcasts of business tips, impromptu interviews with mega-preneurs like Marie Forleo, and book recommendations. Of course, Derek&#8217;s an ace in video blogging, so this platform is perfect for him. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to use Periscope to build your writing business<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how in the world can writers take advantage of this? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freelance writer Carrie Smith of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carefulcents.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Careful Cents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses Periscope to offer behind-the-scenes looks at her work space and Q&amp;A sessions about freelancing and budgeting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am really loving Periscope, and will definitely be leveraging it more,\u201d she said. Smith sold a coaching session after a particularly successful scope. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blogger Javacia Harris Bowser has created a weekly event tied to her organization, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seejanewritebham.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See Jane Write<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She hosts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23seejanescope&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#SeeJaneScope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> events where folks can discuss blogging, business and writing goals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.periscope.tv\/JonAcuff\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Acuff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often summarizes longer social media posts into a quick list on Periscope, with titles like &#8220;10 Small Things Every Big Writer Needs to Know.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WillieshaMorris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periscope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> streams have teased upcoming blog posts in a similar fashion. I\u2019ve also used it to give live tours of interesting places I\u2019ve visited. Most of my scopes have been brief and personal. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periscope best practices<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To recap: behind-the-scenes scopes, Q&amp;As, blog teasers, regular events and video social media posts are a few ways writers can use Periscope to build your brand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before you sign up, remember a few things:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. This is a brand new (and changing) form of social media <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give Periscope the same respect as other new tools. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And like those other social media tools, Periscope notifications can be quite addicting. You could spend an entire day watching broadcasts or creating broadcasts to ask people what nail color to pick at the salon (I saw this happen, for real). <\/span><b>Try not to get sucked in.<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Be purposeful when creating and watching video <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can automatically add everyone you follow on Twitter to your Periscope account. But since this media is just getting off the ground, not everyone is using it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Only follow people who broadcast regularly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you go to someone\u2019s profile and they only have one heart or have no recent broadcasts, it&#8217;s best to unfollow them. Hearts are insta-likes: viewers can tap the screen to indicate when they like something. You get one heart automatically for joining, so if there&#8217;s just one heart, more than likely they haven&#8217;t done any broadcasts. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Integrate Periscope into your social media<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/marketing-strategies-for-writers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content marketing plan<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you scope sporadically, prepare for in advance and make sure you provide <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">valuable content<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to keep people watching. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a plan a certain number of Facebook or Twitter posts every week, do the same with Periscope broadcasts. <\/span><b>Include them on an editorial calendar with other content you produce.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periscope is new and features will be added (and possibly removed) as the needs of its audience changes. Just like any other social media platform, if it&#8217;s not for you, don&#8217;t include it to showcase or market your writing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What do you think of this new platform?
