{"id":6992,"date":"2022-02-16T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=6992"},"modified":"2022-11-08T22:59:36","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T03:59:36","slug":"newsletter-best-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=6992","title":{"rendered":"Email Newsletter Best Practices: 4 Things to Consider"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019re a writer, a designer, or a journalist, you\u2019ve probably thought about your <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/marketing-yourself-freelance-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal br<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/marketing-yourself-freelance-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\">and. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing on your personal branding efforts can guide your freelancing career and assignment choices as well as let people know who you are and what you care about. But many look at it as a guide, not a rule.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>I identify myself a journalist who champions female friendships, and who often writes about roller derby, grief, and <\/b><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thebillfold.com\/2015\/09\/the-cost-of-being-hearing-impaired-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>being hearing impaired<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019m known for these topics, but they are by no means a limitation on what I choose to write about, or what assignments I decide to take on. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This self-perception <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often influence what I choose to include in <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/thesleeperhit\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my email newsletter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which I send out every two weeks. Each email contains links to any bylines I had in the last 14 days as well as to articles I read and enjoyed. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subscribers learn more about the topics I am interested in, and I love it when I get email responses or Facebook posts from readers who want to make sure I\u2019ve seen that video of Santa using American Sign Language with a child, or a <\/span><a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thebillfold.com\/2014\/12\/shopping-with-and-for-my-dying-mother\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beautiful personal essay about losing a parent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My newsletter also provides a way to promote the book I\u2019m working on about learning to play roller derby. Every time I publish a piece and an author bio links readers to my newsletter, I get a small bump of new subscribers<\/span> and it helps expand my personal branding efforts.  <b>These subscribers have the potential to turn into fans &#8212; meaning when my book gets published down the road, I\u2019ll have a built-in fanbase of people excited to consume it.<\/b> (If you&#8217;re an author, looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/self-publishingschool.com\/author-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tips on author branding<\/a>, check out this article.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spoke with the freelance writers behind some extremely <a aria-label=\"successful newsletters (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/why-writers-need-a-newsletter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\">successful newsletters<\/a> to get new ideas for using email marketing to build and further the reach of your personal brand.<\/span> In this article, we&#8217;ll look at 4 newsletter best practices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"#inbox\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Inbox Respect<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#loyalty\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Audience Loyalty and Personal Branding<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#freedom\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Creative Freedom<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#consistency\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Consistency<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"newsletter best practices\" class=\"wp-image-39811\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/6-Reasons-Every-Writer-Should-Have-Their-Own-Newsletter-750x500.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"inbox\">Newsletter Best Practices #1: Inbox Respect <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freelance writer <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annfriedman\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Friedman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, perhaps the queen of the personal email newsletter, began the <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annfriedman.com\/weekly\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Friedman Weekly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March 2013 as a way to keep track of what she produced and consumed each week. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fall 2015, she surpassed TinyLetter\u2019s subscriber limit and transitioned over to the system\u2019s big brother, <a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/best-email-marketing-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"MailChimp (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\">MailChimp<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEventually it will cost me,\u201d Friedman, who <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annfriedman.com\/moneymoneymoney\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made a deal with MailChimp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to provide her first year free, said. \u201cWith MailChimp you pay depending on how many subscribers you have. At this point I have almost 23,000 subscribers, which will not be super cheap.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December, Friedman began offering a premium version of her newsletter to subscribers for a fee of $5 per year. She also began selling ad space at the bottom of Ann Friedman Weekly, similar to <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theskimm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theSkimm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s advertising model. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Friedman said it\u2019s impossible to say if she\u2019s gotten additional freelance work as a direct result of her newsletter, she feels it can\u2019t be hurting her odds.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoing lots of work contributes to me getting more work,\u201d said Friedman. \u201c<\/span><b>There\u2019s a cumulative positive effect: The longer you write and the more you write, the more known you are, and the more assignments you get.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sometimes my editors will reply to the newsletters, which is a good thing to have when you\u2019re a freelancer living on the opposite coast.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said she doesn\u2019t believe in adhering to a narrow rubric of what she will and will not write.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are many things I\u2019m happy I\u2019ve done that I wouldn\u2019t have said yes to [based on those confines],\u201d she said. \u201cBut there\u2019s not always a lot of thought that goes into whether I will pursue or not pursue something. The newsletter fits with a lot of my <a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/122910\/my-paradoxical-quest-build-personal-brand\" target=\"_blank\">[<\/a><\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/122910\/my-paradoxical-quest-build-personal-brand\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anchor] statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and aligns well with my underlying values. One of the important functions it has is that it\u2019s a space I own completely. If I want to change it, I can. It\u2019s something I built myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then there\u2019s the million-dollar question: How does someone like Ann Friedman grow her email newsletter list?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe very, very strongly in not adding people automatically,\u201d Friedman said. \u201cPeople do that to me and it\u2019s a huge pet peeve. I know it\u2019s cliche to say people\u2019s email inboxes are sacred, but it\u2019s like barging into someone\u2019s house unannounced, or at least onto their porch. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>\u201cMake a really great newsletter that is not self-serving and count on people to evangelize.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [One thing I do is] quote people who evangelize for me, as a thank you for doing so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"loyalty\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Newsletter Best Practices #2: Audience Loyalty and Personal Branding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lizgalvao.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Liz Galvao (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Liz Galvao<\/a> also thanks vocal supporters in her funny newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI send a tweet every time I send a new email, but your voice is only amplified by other people online,\u201d Galvao said. \u201cOther people spreading the word [is crucial].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galvao, a freelance writer, started her newsletter in May 2014 as a way to try out a new platform and have a creative outlet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI write a lot of stuff in a character voice or something from a ridiculous point of view [for <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/reductress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reductress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], or music reviews that are not about me at all,\u201d she said. \u201cThis was an outlet that was me writing for myself, and a way for people to get to know me as a person, and not a satirical voice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She commended Marc Maron for being an example of someone who shares with his audience in an authentic, personal way with his podcast, <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtfpod.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WTF With Marc Maron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[On top of doing interviews] he is talking about what\u2019s going on with him,\u201d said Galvao. \u201cThat keeps me subscribing to it. It\u2019s not just self-promotional, there\u2019s original content in there too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galvao\u2019s focus on personal branding is also reflected in her newsletter, whether she\u2019s planned it that way or not.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy knee jerk reaction is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, I don\u2019t think about my brand!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d she said. \u201cBut I definitely do. With the newsletter, it just sort of worked out that that the stuff I am including is relevant to what I\u2019m interested in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>One unexpected benefit of starting a newsletter is creating a built-in audience of readers who look forward to getting her missives.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have all these people who get to know you and are used to hearing from you week after week,\u201d said Galvao. \u201cWhen you send them links to things you wrote, people are more invested in sharing that. There\u2019s a loyalty to the people who subscribe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"freedom\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Newsletter Best Practices #3: Creative Freedom <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suzanne Wilder started <\/span><a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/iheartwords\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Heart Words<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2015 and has enjoyed the thrill of receiving replies from fans and signups from readers she\u2019s never met.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a conversation but there\u2019s that possibility for dialogue to come out of it that doesn\u2019t necessarily happen with a blog post,\u201d said Wilder. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt feels more direct than just posting on my blog. [With Facebook], it\u2019s such a crapshoot of who sees what you post. And with blogging &#8212; can you capture someone\u2019s attention at any given moment? When something is in their inbox, there\u2019s more likelihood of someone reading what you\u2019re sending them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her newsletter has a literary focus, but like her personal brand, she doesn\u2019t stick to this as a hard and fast rule. She also includes recipes and gifs, or commentary on TV shows and documentaries.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy main goal is really just to share interesting things that I find and things with the word and literacy and language bent,\u201d Wilder said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not purely literary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While her newsletter doesn\u2019t generate income, it does provide plenty of creative freedom and help her personal branding. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t make any money from my blog, newsletter, Twitter or Instagram,\u201d Wilder said. \u201cThere\u2019s not a stake in me losing or gaining readers. Not like fashion or lifestyle bloggers. <\/span><b>I don\u2019t have to ask myself, <i>Will I alienate a reader or a sponsor?<\/i><\/b><b> It\u2019s just a creative outlet for me.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"\u201dunique-id\u201d\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Newsletter Best Practices #4: Consistency <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women who send <a href=\"https:\/\/twobossydames.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Two Bossy Dames (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Two Bossy Dames<\/a> every Friday have seen massive success with their email, but lately, they\u2019ve chosen to double down on their social media presence, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrsFridayNext\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margaret H. Willison<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sophiebiblio\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophie Brookover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> started their pop culture newsletter after experimenting with a weekly hashtagged Twitter roundup in the style of Bim Adewunmi\u2019s<\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bims10Things\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> #Bims10Things<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoing a Twitter hashtag roundup seemed like a very low-key way to raise the profile of our project and figure out if this was really something we could do once a week,\u201d said Willison.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two decided they could, and their newsletter has ballooned thanks in part to a ringing endorsement from NPR\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/monkeysee\/129472378\/pop-culture-happy-hour\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pop Culture Happy Hour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> podcast, on which Willison is a frequent guest. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, the pair also credit their social media savviness with the growth their newsletter has seen. Not every newsletter must be anointed by top podcast brass if its sender is willing to take the time to schedule additional content.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are both huge fans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/makealivingwriting.com\/apps-and-tools-writing-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"social media tool Buffer (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\">social media tool Buffer<\/a>, which allows you to collect material in binges and then release it gradually in scheduled posts,\u201d said Willison. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe last few months we&#8217;ve worked hard to keep our Buffer stocked with good material and it\u2019s really worked out. We\u2019ve only really been tending to it since July and our [Twitter] follower count has increased 400 percent at least.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf Buffer would add Tumblr to its supported channels, we would be unstoppable, basically,\u201d Brookover added.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Bossy Dames is co-written by two people but has a very clear, consistent voice. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think we have ever decided not to share something we otherwise thought was great because it wouldn\u2019t be \u2018on brand,\u2019\u201d said Willison. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe closest we\u2019ve come to that is the discussions we\u2019ve had about addressing more serious issues in the newsletter. We\u2019re both politically engaged people. [But] we take pride in rejecting the idea that it is somehow wrong to care about both<\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/twobossydames\/status\/661228344495722497\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rubber bands with little bow accents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/buff.ly\/1QtLsTZ\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ramifications of systematic racial violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/TwoBossyDames\/letters\/categorize-us-we-defy-many-labels\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marginalization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond that, the newsletter\u2019s growth has been pretty organic, mostly through word-of-mouth endorsements and podcast appearances.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brookover said that while the success has been fulfilling to see, <\/span><b>one of the best parts about creating a newsletter has been the people they\u2019ve met (virtually) along the way.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think one of my favorite things about running Two Bossy Dames is that it\u2019s introduced us to smart, sharp, excellent women who have told us that we inspired them to start a <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/find-an-hour-a-day-for-your-freelance-side-hustle\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side hustle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their own,\u201d she said. \u201cIt sets up this great feedback loop of enthusiasm and encouragement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What to do next?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you exercise your creative freedom and post consistently, you&#8217;re bound to grow your personal brand. No one looks at the world quite like you do.
