{"id":8454,"date":"2016-07-11T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=8454"},"modified":"2016-07-07T12:20:24","modified_gmt":"2016-07-07T17:20:24","slug":"how-to-write-a-book-in-3-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=8454","title":{"rendered":"How to Write a Book in 3 Weeks: This Plan Makes It Possible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m an author.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For writers who want to publish a book, the thought of uttering those words is a dream waiting to be explored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for many, it never transfers to reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, it\u2019s a lack of time. Or you\u2019re not clear on what you should write about. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For others, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/13-productivity-apps-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discipline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it takes to write a book eludes you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What if I told you that you\u2019re just three weeks away from having a finished \u00a0manuscript in your possession?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s how long it took me to write mine. And in this post, I\u2019ll share how I did it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Start with why<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do you want to write a book? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?language=en\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simon Sinek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> repeats, your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is what drives you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s what will motivate you when the last thing you want to do is write. And it\u2019s what will keep you moving towards your goal when you\u2019re about to give up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I\u2019ll ask you again: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do you want to write a book?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it as simple as introducing yourself as an author? Or does it go deeper than that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, it\u2019s about credibility with your target audience. For others it\u2019s about marketing and brand growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For me, it was about showing my audience that my expertise goes beyond writing copy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Plan to write your book<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with having smart <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/28-resources-tools-and-tips-for-self-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writing tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available when you get down to writing, making a conscious plan for your project is vital \u2014 especially when you\u2019ve restricted your delivery date to <\/span><b>three weeks from today<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t take on any new clients, and I minimized my social activity. It was only three weeks, and I was on a mission!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also told friends what I was doing. My business accountability partner knew my mission and helped keep me on track by sending me messages on random days asking how my progress was going. It pushed me to action when I was watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Walking Dead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You don\u2019t need to write for three consecutive weeks like I did. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could pick one week per month for three months, and stick to that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re willing to block off three consecutive weeks, here\u2019s the schedule I used:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day 1-4: Planning, chapter outlines and research<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day 5-16: Writing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day 17-19: Proofreading<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day 20-21: Revisions and final manuscript<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Along with making a schedule, plan for the partners you\u2019ll need, like proofreaders, contributors or interviewees.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Schedule calls with them and get time on their calendars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planning these events not only prepares your partners for their commitments, but also helps you stick to your deadlines because they\u2019re relying on you to deliver.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Use the 20-minute technique<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting, by far, is the most difficult part of writing your book. <\/span><b>Most people have little idea of what their book would be about, and put off starting until they find <\/b><b><i>the one<\/i><\/b><b> golden idea.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A friend taught me a 20-minute technique that I used on day one of my project. By the end of 20 minutes, I had an overview of the messages in my book and how I would outline my chapters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a simple technique that goes like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Set a timer for 10 minutes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Take a pen and paper and answer the following question: <\/span><b>What are ten key messages of my book?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (These will be your chapters!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Once your 10 minutes is up, set the timer again for 10 minutes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For each of your key messages (chapters), write three key outcomes for each chapter<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This exercise is incredibly simple and open, and allows you to explore exactly what the messages in your book will be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also draws on your gut instincts about your book. If you\u2019ve been thinking about it for a while, you already know what your book will be about. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This technique forces you to expand on your idea. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting this task to just 20 minutes \u00a0forces you to make a decision about the direction of your book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t worry if your ideas aren\u2019t refined. You can polish them later. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This technique is here purely to help you commit to your ideas on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Turn commitment into discipline<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three weeks isn\u2019t a long time to write a book, especially when it includes proofreading and creating the final draft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is when discipline comes into play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A commitment like this can bring up many limiting actions \u2014 writer\u2019s block, procrastination, and so on.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily for you, The Write Life has plenty of resources to help you become more disciplined in your writing. Here are some my personal favorites:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/fighting-writers-block-get-creativity-flowing\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know what to write. <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/stop-procrastinating-5-foolproof-methods-writers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really don\u2019t want to write right now.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/make-time-to-write-guide-for-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have children \u2014 how will I find the time?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/discover-protect-creative-time\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time is an issue \u2014 I can\u2019t find it!<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you know what to do, go forth and write!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tell us: Have you been planning to write a book?
