{"id":8805,"date":"2016-08-16T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-16T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=8805"},"modified":"2024-03-04T15:58:48","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T20:58:48","slug":"amtrak-writing-residency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/?p=8805","title":{"rendered":"All Aboard! 3 Writers on Amtrak\u2019s Amazing Writing Residency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What writer doesn&#8217;t dream of spending long days riding the rails while cranking out finely-crafted and inspired prose? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget about the chance to chat with mysterious and fascinating strangers in the dining car, and being rocked to sleep by the train&#8217;s gentle swaying through the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amtrak Residency<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, established in 2014, makes this dream come true \u2014 if you\u2019re lucky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Differing from a traditional <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/what-to-expect-first-writing-residency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>writing residency<\/b><\/a><b>, this one takes place on trains crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company recently released the names of its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new crop of residents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What&#8217;s it like to participate in an Amtrak Residency program?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We asked three Amtrak writers in residence about their trips.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Boylan\u2019s productive journey<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jenniferboylan.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Boylan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/thewritelife.com\/memoir-examples\/\">bestselling memoir <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s Not There: a Life in Two Genders<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spent three weeks on her residency journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She started in Maine, taking the Downeaster line to Boston, followed by the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, the California Zephyr to San Francisco, and the Coast Starlight to Salinas, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once she arrived in Salinas, she spent a few days at a spa finishing her novel before hopping on the Coast Starlight back to Seattle, the Empire Builder to Chicago, the Lake Shore Limited and the Downeaster back to Maine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boylan relished her time on the train. \u201cIt was a delight. The chambers are SMALL, but you do have a sense of elegance,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also enjoyed the dining options. \u201cThe food is surprisingly good, and you can also take your meals in your berth if you want, which I tended to do for lunches.\u201d <\/span><b>Boylan found peace and quiet, which gave her time to think and work. \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of internet access was also a great help. \u201cI think trains are great places to work, and the sustained quiet time was magnificent. The very best thing was the fact that for long stretches of the country there is no internet, and thus no interruptions or distractions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Her daily schedule involved work, relaxing, and dining. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI tended to get up early, have coffee in the observation car, work all morning in my berth, take lunch in the berth, spend the afternoon revising, and then chill in late afternoon, looking out the window or hanging in the dining car. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Boylan&#8217;s journey was productive: she was able to finish a rough draft of her novel and write two essays during her\u00a0trip.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But while fantastic scenery can aid the writing process, it can also become a distraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe hard thing about the long-distance trains is that you really do want to spend your time looking out the window in amazement,\u201d she says. \u201cEspecially the Denver to San Francisco run \u2014 you go through parts of the country that you really can\u2019t go to any other way \u2014 \u00a0really jaw-dropping scenery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doylan also recommends packing a healthy dose of patience. \u201cI\u2019d suggest not being in any particular hurry, either with your work, or with your desire to get anywhere,\u201d she says. \u201cThe long distance trains, especially on the Empire Builder, tend to run late\u2026 but that\u2019s all part of the journey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Krouse\u2019s whistle-stop book tour<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erikakrousewriter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Krouse<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used her Amtrak residency to do more than write. She also used the trip to promote her novel, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2aPn6DU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contenders<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI decided to double-duty my residency,\u201d she says of the choice to mix writing and promotion. \u201cI took the California Zephyr from Denver to Emeryville, then took the Coast Starlight to Los Angeles. I did a few readings in LA and San Francisco, then rode back over the mountains to home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As she worked on the train, she found that the project she originally planned to pursue during her residency wasn&#8217;t well-suited to the journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had planned to do some revision, but soon discovered it was impossible,\u201d she says. \u201cInstead, I mostly took notes, maybe 50 pages of notes. <\/span><b>Train travel is more suitable for gathering information about the world around you as it rushes past.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At least, it was for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also offered a few tips for aspiring train writers, including encouragement to leave devices behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTechnology isn&#8217;t your friend\u2014glare, noise, and the interesting scenery all suck your attention from the screen,\u201d she says. \u201cGo old school and use a notebook and a good pen. Turn off your phone and your camera\u2014instead, rely on your words to evoke the setting. Talk to people and ask them nosy questions. Feel yourself relax, and notice what that does to free your mind. Take a favorite book. Bring wet wipes and warm socks. Try to record your changing surroundings, and the experience of being conscious in it. Hydrate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deanne Stillman\u2019s research bonanza<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deannestillman.com\/writer.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deanne Stillman<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is planning to head out on her journey this fall, going east across the Great Plains on the California Zephyr and returning to the West Coast on the Empire Builder through Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While on the rails, she\u2019ll work on her upcoming book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Brothers: The Strange Friendship Between Sitting Bull and Buffalo Bill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The route she chose serves as crucial research for her book.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cPlace, especially the American West, is a main character in my work \u2014 and life \u2014 and it will be in this new book,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explained, \u201cI&#8217;d like to see the frontier from the POV of the Iron Road, aka the railroad, as Sitting Bull saw it when he left the plains to join the Wild West show. And of course, the plains were where the buffalo roamed, and where William Cody established himself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing historically significant places firsthand will help Krouse envision the characters&#8217; journeys and provide important background information for her writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you can write on the rails<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convinced that writing on trains is for you?
